MOVIE: Prime

On my flight from Toronto to Amsterdam, I watched Prime starring Meryl Streep, Uma Thurman & Bryan Greenberg. Click here for Prime's official website. Meryl & Uma play in roles that are completely different from most of their previous films - differing entirely from Kill Bill (showing Uma's diversity as an actress). Prime is another romantic comedy with some playful humour which pokes fun at new relationships that are fighting against the odds of such a mismatch... merely real people reacting to each other and their circumstances. There were numerous moments where my neighbour on the plane & I, moved forward in our seats to exchanges subdued chuckles (so as to avoid waking up our other neighbour who was sleeping soundly). It had some amusing moments with the basics of depth & an inevitable ending.

Prime is a story of an older, recently divorced woman, Rafi (Uma Thurman), who discovers a fresh romance with an embarrassingly, MUCH younger man, David (Bryan Greenberg). Simultaneously, she's working out her guilt over dating this younger 'guy' with her therapist, Lisa (Meryl Streep), who shockingly discovers that the "embarrassing younger man" is her son.

You know it's situational comedy time when Lisa learns the truth, and realises that she's caught between maternally protecting her son vs frowning upon their relationship, and the conflict of interest between herself as a professional vs that of her client. This is a mildly entertaining movie that is perfect for a quiet night at home alone, with a bowl of popcorn & your DVD player.
